Voice of Older People (VOP) is a Humanitarian not-for-profit non-governmental organization working to achieve a better life for family members on the basis of democracy and human rights. VOP is registered with Kurdistan regional government and have its main office located in Dohuk Governorate, but runs projects and activities in a number of other Iraqi cities and towns such as Shekhan and Sulaymaniya. VOP is well-known for its social activities and have experienced staff in different fields such as advocacy, human rights, voluntary programs, voter and political awareness and civil society issues. VOP aims at achieving a lasting development in a society where all social groups have equal rights and access to basic services.
2010 was a busy year for VOP since it witnessed the implementation of a series of projects and activities in cooperation with different international agencies.

Ongoing Home visits from 360 (174 M, 186 f) VOP volunteers to older men and women in Amediya district to provide social support and accompanying to health facilities. The volunteers carried out 17,160 social and practical help visits to older people. In addition, the 360 volunteers paid 4,644 health visits for the purpose of measuring blood pressure, accompanying to health facilities and collecting chronic illness drugs.

Enhancing Peaceful Coexistence through working women

Sewing trainings for 40 women from different religious and ethnic backgrounds in Shekhan aiming at strengthening peaceful coexistence and tolerance
1- Anti-corruption Cartoon Exhibition “Corruption Flue”: VOP opened a cartoon exhibition in ‘Shaheed Salman’ hall in which 30 cartoon drawings were exhibited criticizing in a satiric way the phenomenon of corruption in the governmental institutions in Duhok. The drawings were drawn by Hoger Sulaivani, a graduate from the Institute of Fine Arts/ Duhok. The exhibition was visited by representatives of different governmental and non governmental institutions and it also attracted the attention of media as there were lots of mass media outlets at the place of the activity. 2- VOP Home Visiting and Emergency Health Program: VOP has an ongoing voluntary home visiting programme. 360 volunteers (174 M, 186 F) of different ages visit older people. The volunteers paid out 17,160 social and practical help visits to older people during 2010. In addition, they paid 4,644 health visits for the purpose of measuring blood pressure, accompanying older people to health facilities and collecting chronic illness drugs.
3- Voter Education in Duhok and Sulaimaniya: VOP with cooperation from DAI implemented a project for educating people in Zawita district (Duhok) and Chamchamal district (Sulaimaniya) on issues of democracy, civil society, the importance and process of election. The project was a part of a large campaign dealing with educating voters on the process of election as this was to prepare for the elections of Iraqi parliament. The project consisted of 40 workshops to explain the electoral system and Democracy values to Voters to encourage participation in the parliamentary elections. 4- Water Filters Distribution: VOP received 1400 water filters from the ‘Greater Than Me’ foundation to be delivered to people in the areas where there is no access to clean water. So, the activity was in the form of awareness raising on water consumption and cleanliness and distribution of water filters to improve beneficiaries access to potable water in Sulaimaniya, Duhok, Serie and Sheladizey.
5- Distribution of Gift Boxes to Children: VOP received 610 boxes of gifts for children from CAPNI organization. This was within the activities of the project of ‘Child to Child Gift’ which is being run by CAPNI. The gifts were distributed by VOP to 610 orphans from different areas of Duhok such as Sheladizay, Deralook, Qadish and Faida. The orphaned children received the gifts were mostly those cared for by older people.
6- Food Parcels and Clothes Distribution: In cooperation with Islamic Relief Worldwide – Iraq (IRW), VOP distributed 683 food parcels (containing rice, lentils, sugar, tomato paste, spaghetti and canned meat) to IDP families and needy families in Duhok, Amediya and Faida districts. This is in addition to 70 men jeans which were also distributed to IDP family members.
7-Promotion of Health and Hygiene amongst IDPs in Amediya District: VOP has implemented a four-month project funded by UNOCHA and coordinated with DoH Duhok. The project included 40 health awareness sessions to IDPs and returnees in Amadia district, distribution of 1000 Hygienic kits, and distribution of 220 wheelchairs and 47 Toilet chairs and 50 pairs of crutches to people with disabilities. The project was implemented in coordination with DoH, different governmental and non governmental institutions such as the department of migration in Duhok (DDM), Jeen group for disabled persons, Harikar NGO and directorate of social welfare. 8- Enhancing Peaceful Coexistence through Working Women: Based on its care for the issue of peaceful coexistence and the role of women, VOP implemented a project for enhancing peaceful coexistence through working women funded by the German Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations, IFA). VOP has chosen Shekhan for the project as it is a society where groups of different religious and ethnic background live. The project included sewing trainings for 40 women from different religious and ethnic backgrounds aiming at strengthening peaceful coexistence and tolerance. Moreover, 500 copies of a calendar showing the importance of peaceful coexistence were distributed to different governmental and non governmental institutions. Because the project was found to be successful, it is planned to be extended with some modifications based on lessons learnt. See www.vopiraq.org for final report about this project.
9- VOP has a regular live radio programme broadcast by the Duhok radio discussing the issues of older people (health, social, psychological and economical issues) and their families.
10- VOP is intent to bring older people’s occasions into attention through holding ceremonies. One example of this is that VOP makes a celebration for older people on the 1st of October of every year as the International Day of Older People.
